Most people know the history of Native Americans and their battles with foreign settlers who now form the United States of America. But have you every wondered how and why did Native Americans get into the gambling business? According to the National Indian Gaming Association there are 572 federally recognized Indian tribes with 224 of those tribes involved in the gambling business. Here are some reasons why Native American Tribes own so many casinos across the country.
- Indian Reservations are Exempt from State Taxes & Regulations
The federal government declared in the 1970′s by Chief Justice William Brennan Jr. that the state government have no authority to tax Indian reservations and regulate activities. This led to tribal leaders opening bingo halls and offering larger jackpot prizes that were otherwise illegal off the reservation.
- To Increase Income on Tribal Reservations
Many tribal reservations are located in remote mid western areas like Nevada. Most reservations aren’t close to major metropolitan areas so means of finding employment are low. Prior to the 1990′s casino gambling was heavily restricted and forbidden in most states. Since the federal government forbade the state from taxing and regulating tribal activities, tribal leaders taking advantage of American settlers love for gambling saw this as a great income generating opportunity.
- To Improve Infrastructure on Reservations
Prior to the expansion of casinos on Indian reservations and low poverty levels. Resources such as schools, housing and medical facilities did not have adequate resources. With the success of casino resorts generating billions of dollars, tribal casino owners are now able to further develop and improve the quality of life on their reservations.
